Lichen Planus – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Lichen planus is a relatively common skin disease that comes in episodes lasting months to years. It appears as purple or reddish-purple bumps on the skin. The bumps have flat tops and are uneven in shape. It is most commonly found on the flexor surfaces of the upper extremities, on the genitalia, and on the mucous membranes. LP is most likely an immunologically mediated reaction. Skin LP affects men and women equally, but oral LP affects women twice as often as men. LP occurs most frequently in middle-aged adults. The cause of LP is not known. Lichen planus can appear on any area of the skin. The most common areas are the inner wrists, the forearms and the ankles. Lichen planus in children is rare. Occasionally oral lichen planus involves the throat or the esophagus. The disorder has been known to develop after exposure to potential allergens such as medications, dyes, and other chemical substances. Symptoms are increased with emotional stress, possibly because of changes in immune system during stress. Lichen planus may cause a small number of skin lesions or less often affect a wide area of the skin and mucous membranes. In 85% of cases it clears from skin surfaces within 18 months but it may persist longer especially when affecting the mouth or genitals.

Lichen planus usually heals on its own within two years. Lichen planus of the nails can cause brittle or split nails. In the mouth, it looks like lacy white patches on the inside of the cheeks or on the tongue. Lichen planus is generally not harmful and may resolve with treatment. It appears to be a reaction in response to more than one provoking factor. About 1 in 100 people develop lichen planus. It can also cause ulcers in the mouth but this is uncommon. Lichen planus may be associated with several other disorders, most notably hepatitis C. More than two thirds of cases occur in people aged 30-60 years. There is no known cure for skin lichen planus, but treatment is often effective in relieving itching and improving the appearance of the rash until it goes away. Lichen planus may also affect the scalp, the nails or the inside of the mouth. On the scalp, lichen planus may cause hair loss. The expression or unmasking of the lichen planus antigen may be induced by drugs (lichenoid drug reaction), contact allergens in dental restorative materials or toothpastes (contact hypersensitivity reaction), mechanical trauma (Koebner phenomenon), viral infection, or unidentified agents. It is not a cancer or an infectious disease that can be passed on and it does not run in families.

Causes of Lichen planus

The common causes and risk factor’s of Lichen planus include the following:

The exact cause is unknown, but the disorder is likely to be related to an allergic or immune reaction.

Medical conditions: Medical conditions associated with oral lichen planus include lichen planus of the skin, hypertension, diabetes and peptic ulcers.

The disorder has been known to develop after exposure to potential allergens such as medications, dyes, and other chemical substances.

It can also cause ulcers in the mouth but this is uncommon.

One theory is that the immune system may be ‘triggered’ by a virus or other factor in the environment to attack cells on the skin which leads to the inflammation.

Lichen planus may be associated with several other disorders, most notably hepatitis C.

Certain medications, such as some of those used to treat arthritis, heart disease, high blood pressure and malaria, may trigger oral lichen planus in some people.

Symptoms of Lichen planus

Some sign and symptoms related to Lichen planus are as follows:

Itching in the location of a lesion, mild to severe.

Ridges in the nails ( nail abnormalities ).

Hair loss.

Dry mouth.

Metallic taste in the mouth.

The spots of lichen planus are flat-topped, pink-purple in colour, and usually 3mm to 5mm wide.

Mouth ulcers also arise causing soreness that is made worse by hot or spicy food.

Treatment of Lichen planus

Here is list of the methods for treating Lichen planus:

Antihistamines.

Measures to relieve anxiety are helpful.

In more severe cases, physicians may recommend oral medications or therapy with ultraviolet light.

Topical tretinoin cream 0.05% applied to mucosal lichen planus followed by topical corticosteroid cream may be beneficial.

Occlusive dressings may be placed over topical medications to protect the skin from scratching.

Topical retinoic acid cream (a form of vitamin A) and other ointments or creams may reduce itching and inflammation and may aid healing.

Ultraviolet light therapy may be beneficial in some cases.

Question…

Do I have the H1N1 Virus?

Hello, I’ll list all of my symptoms
- Really Thirsty
- Fever
- Ankles, Neck, and Legs hurt
- Dizzying feeling if I move too fast
- A lot of drainage
- Very, Sore Throat

I’ve just recently contracted some of these symptoms, as I made the mistake of going to school with the only side effect of being rather tired, and with an sore throat.
If someone could list treatment, it would be great also. Thanks!

Answers…

Answer by gwad
I’m no doctor, but these symptoms sound like the symptoms of any influenza virus, you can’t tell if you have swine flu just from symptoms… if you’re worried you should see a doctor! But viruses you cannot cure with antibiotics, you just have to let it run its course.

Answer by Zen
Im not a doctor, but it sounds like your getting your period.

Answer by Truth
Man I hate sore throats. And there is not a darn thing you can do until it goes away. However, the old cure all of honey and lemon works for a bit like magic. Look up the concoction on the web. Get used to taking lots of ibuprofen. Fever makes you thirsty and exhausted. My guess is EVERYTHING hurts just that your ankles neck and legs hurt more. Drainage comes with the sore throat and is possibly the reason for it. Post nasal drip and all that. If you can add to that coughing and spitting out junk from your lungs you could have a flu. What kind it is is not real important. However it wouldn’t hurt to get into the doc. But I will tell you with the H1 sufferers we had, it was amazing if they could lift an arm. That’s how exhausted they were. So yes it is a bad flu and you could have it. Did you get the vaccine? Hmm a little late now.
You just have to suck it up and treat the symptoms and if you are not starting to get better in like 72hours you need to get some help. LOTS of FLUIDS. Don’t worry about eating except for like toast and such. And stay away from anyone and everyone for like a week if you can. Not only are you probably still infectious and can give it to them, You can get it back from them. Didn’t see that one coming did you? Anyway feel better and this too shall pass.

Bronchiectasis Causes Symptoms Information With Treatment

Bronchiectasis is a lung condition in which some of the bronchi and bronchioles have lost their elasticity and have expanded and filled with fluid. With bronchiectasis, these natural cleaning mechanisms have become damaged or destroyed. Although bronchiectasis can develop at any age, it generally begins during childhood. The mucus is then normally wafted away by the beating of tiny hairs called cilia which line the tubes see figure.Normally the airways in the lung are sterile – they are not infected. Also, inflammation and an increased number of blood vessels in the bronchial wall can result in a person coughing up blood. Blockage of the damaged airways can lead to abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood. Typically, bronchiectasis causes widening of medium-sized bronchi, but often smaller bronchi become scarred and destroyed. Occasionally, a form of bronchiectasis affecting larger bronchi occurs in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, a condition caused by an allergic response to the Aspergillus fungus.

Causes of Bronchiectasis

The common Causes of Bronchiectasis :

Inhaling stomach acid which has been regurgitated back into the gullet

Healing of the tubes resulting in puckering and scarring, causing obstruction

Underlying genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis, where the mucus in the bronchial tubes is too thick, and primary ciliary dyskinesia, where the cilia lining the bronchial tubes do not beat properly

Immunodeficiency disorders, such as HIV infection and AIDS.

Cystic fibrosis, which leads to almost half of the cases of bronchiectasis in the United States.

Tuberculosis (TB) and other similar infections

Mechanical obstruction of the bronchial tubes by inhaled foreign bodies, for example, peanuts

Too little immunity to infection, for example after infantile pneumonia from whooping cough or measles, or lack of antibodies which occasionally occurs after a virus infection in adult life.

Symptoms of Bronchiectasis

Some Symptoms of Bronchiectasis :

Fatigue.

Paleness .

Weight loss .

Shortness of breath worsened by exercise.

Coughing up blood .

Wheezing .

Skin discoloration, bluish .

Cough worsened by lying on one side.

Breath odor .

Treatment of Bronchiectasis

If you are able, a daily exercise such as running, walking, swimming, dancing, aerobics, etc, helps to clear the mucus too.

Smoking makes symptoms worse and smokers are very strongly advised to stop.

Surgery may be an option if you have a small local area of lung damage causing symptoms. Cutting out the damaged airway may cure the problem. Surgery may be considered even if you have widespread bronchiectasis. This may be to cut out a particularly bad area of lung that is acting as a reservoir for mucus and infection. Occasionally, a lung transplant may be considered in severe cases.

Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation in your lungs. They work best when you take them with an inhaler.

Mucus thinners , such as acetylcysteine, loosen the mucus.

treatment of nose or sinus infection and runny nose using nasal drops and sprays.

If you have mild bronchiectasis, you may need a course of antibiotics every ‘now and then’ to clear chest infections as and when they occur. A change of the colour of your sputum to green and feeling unwell usually indicates that you have a chest infection. If you have severe bronchiectasis, you may find that chest infections return quickly once you stop taking antibiotics. In this situation you may be advised to take antibiotics every day to keep chest infections away.

Improvement of airflow through the bronchial tubes by anti-asthma treatment.

Question…

How long will my computer last if I maintain in this way?

I defrag it monthly, I scan for viruses and spyware 3 times a week, I clean it with compressed air monthly, I alway shut it down when I go to bed instead of putting it to sleep, I vaccuum the area around it twice a week, and I get rid of all ol and unused programs on my computer.

Under this treatment how long will my computer last? It was built in 2006.

Answers…

Answer by Hisako
About 6-10 years.

Answer by Retin
Trust me it will last you a lot longer than you would need it to especially if you pamper it like that.IYou would probably want to get a better computer in 3 or 4 years anyway not because it will break down but it just becomes obsolete…upgrading can only go so far.

Answer by cajunspike1959
Its usually the hard disk thats the first part to fail, but the way your babying that system, it should go quite a long time.

Answers…

Answer by droopy
I think when the lesions are dried up it is o.k., but check with your local health dept. to be sure.

Answer by luna
I think as long as they don’t touch any open sores, but talk to your doctor.

Answer by cyanne2ak
Yes, the above answer is correct. Once the lesions are dried, they are no longer contagious. However, I wouldn’t worry about giving chicken pox to a kid. It’s MUCH better that they get it younger than older. As for the 10 month old, yeah it’s no big deal.

Diabetes Information – Symptoms, Types, Causes and Treatment

Sugar is part of a whole slew of meals. The carbohydrates that we eat are later on converted into sugar or glucose while it undergoes the processes inside our body. These sugars are what we use for energy. However, there are really foods that are pure sugar or contain a lot it, which can cause the sugar level in our blood. When this sugar level increase, we may suffer diabetes and other ailments.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease resulting from the increase of blood sugar level above its normal values. The sugars in the blood are supposed to be transported to the cells of the body. But if a person has diabetes, the sugar build up in the blood. The build up of sugar is caused one of the following reasons: either the pancreas is not producing enough hormones called insulin that helps the glucose get into the cells or the body can not make use of the insulin as it is supposed to be.

Diabetes is a disease that exists not only on its own but could trigger a lot of complications and other diseases to surface. These diabetes complications include heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and amputations. It has become one of the major causes of death all over the world.

 Symptoms of Diabetes

Like any other sickness, diabetes surface symptoms that should be monitored. These are physically manifested symptoms that could easily diagnosed so if anyone is suffering from the following, seeing a physician is recommended. Diabetes have the following signs: extreme hunger and thirst, excessive drying of the skin, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, slow healing sores, tingling or numbness of hands or feet, sudden vision blurredness.

When the diabetes is insulin-dependent, other symptoms include nausea, vomiting or stomach pains.

Types of Diabetes

There are three kinds of diabetes that could be developed to specific age range or condition of people. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or the type 1 diabetes is commonly developed among children while non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or the type 2 diabetes is developed among adults. There is also the kind of diabetes that only pregnant women can acquire. The gestational diabetes, though, is not permanent because it disappears as soon as the pregnancy is over; however, if it is not treated it can cause a threat to both the mother and the baby.

Type 2 diabetes is affected by old age, obesity, family history of the ailment, history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, lack of physical activities and race or ethnicity.

 Causes of Diabetes

Though researchers have found out what are the things that causes the acquisition of diabetes, the determination of the exact causes of the disease is yet to be discovered. They say that the causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are different. Type 1 seemed to be developed from environmental triggers like unidentified virus that attacks the pancreas and causes it to malfunction in producing insulin.

Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is closely associated with being obese and regular physical activities can help prevent the development of which.

Therapies and Treatment for Diabetes

When a person has developed type 1 diabetes, his or her blood glucose levels should be closely monitored through regular glucose tests. Since most food intake contains sugar or substances that will later on be converted to sugar, it is necessary that the food to be eaten is also monitored or measured. Healthy diet, exercise and insulin injections are the basic treatments for type 1 diabetes. However, the insulin should be balanced with metabolism of the body in terms of physical activities and food intake.

Treatment for type 2 diabetes is almost the same with that of type 1. Blood glucose should also be closely monitored; however, some people are required to take some oral medications to avoid blood sugar to increase beyond normal parameters. Since this type of diabetes is not insulin-dependent, insulin injections are not required.

Question…

West Nile Virus. Is there a Cure?

I think i got it because i got bite by a mosqueo and they said that a whole bunch of mosequtioz carry West Nile. wat r the symptoms? is there a cure? is there treatment? will i die n a set amount of time plz answer my life’s in ur handz

Answers…

Answer by Diane A
West Nile is caused by a virus; you get better on your own. Treatment is for symptoms only. Very few people die from it–usually those who are elderly, very very young or immunocompromised. Some people have or a mild flu like syndrome. Most people have no symptoms or symptoms that are so mild that people do not realize they have been infected. Mild or moderate symptoms include fever, tiredness, headache, and body aches, occasionally with skin rash and swollen lymph nodes. Not all mosquitos carry West Nile & not all bites transmit it.
Symptoms: About 80% of people who are infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms.1 When symptoms do appear, they develop 3 to 14 days after infection and include fever, tiredness, headache, and body aches, occasionally with skin rash and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms usually last 3 to 6 days in people who have a mild infection. With more severe infections, symptoms can last from weeks to months.

On rare occasions the infection affects the brain or spinal cord, sometimes causing encephalitis, meningitis, or myelitis. Symptoms may include headache, high fever, stiff neck, reduced attention to surroundings, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness or paralysis, and coma.

Answer by Wyah
Very high fever, headache, confusion, muscle aches, tiredness, and body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. When did you get bitten? It generally takes 2-15 days to show up after the bite. Most likely if you have it, you’ll be fine, but if it’s severe they’ll put you on IV, manage your airway, respiration, etc. It doesnt usually get that bad though. No cure- sorry:(

How you Can Do Medical Treatment yourself

Copyright (c) 2008 Vlad Kott

All we from time to time are ill with this or that illness. The main thing should be defined what the reason of illness is and then it will be possible to make a decision what drug to use. Someone prefers to address at once to the doctor.Personally I for a long time am prefering not to address to doctors as they seldom helped me and at times even harmed.

I have decided to have medical treatment myself if it of course is not very serious illness.I had refered little bit to medical literature. What illnesses we collide with?

The reasons of illnesses are various and numerous.Their consideration naturally enough leads to classification of illnesses on following basic groups: 1) congenital defects; 2) infections; 3) infringements of a metabolism; 4)avitaminosis(vitamin insufficiency (deficiency); 5) tumoral diseases; 6) the illnesses caused by physical or chemical influences, poisons and an intoxication; 7) degeneration diseases; allergies.

Illnesses also classify to action on which organs or systems of an organism they influences. So, there are illnesses of digestive system, organs of breath or cardiovascular system. Almost all diseases fall under such classification. However mental frustration make a separate category as are connected with mental or emotional changes.

There are special group of diseases of still unknown origin (illnesses that amaze a lymph nodes, a leather, lungs, bones and other structures of an organism).

Illnesses of infectious character are rather numerous and often lead to fatal outcomes. Among them distinguish the diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, the elementary, worms and arthropods (in particular, insects). As a whole, the majority of infectious diseases is characterized by a number of the general attributes.

Treatment have radically changed basically with sulfamidic preparations and antibiotics(penicillin, streptomycin, etc.) So, absolutely differently, than earlier,it began to treat a tuberculosis, a pneumonia and a meningitis.

Infringements of a metabolism – very important group of diseases. Their reason can be infringement of such processes as digestion of nutrients, interaction between glands of internal secretion or regulation of development and use of hormones, synthesis of enzymes. In studying the nature of such illnesses the greater role belongs to chemistry and biochemistry.

Deficiency illnesses happen more often from lack of the certain vitamins B to food. Deficiency arising in an organism is caused by specific infringements (first of all processes of a metabolism) and the scurvy, a rickets and gout leads to such diseases, for example.

More often reason of disease are physical influences (warmly, a cold, a sunlight, compressed air, an electric current).

Allergic diseases are caused by the raised sensitivity or the certain substances, or physical factors, for example,to a cold or a heat. The most widespread allergic diseases – a bronchial asthma, red rash and a hay fever.

As a rule, illnesses have the certain displays (symptoms) which the patient can notice, for example a pain, rise in temperature, dizziness, a nausea or a short wind.

Carefully made analysis with the full description of all symptoms serves as the best help for statement of the diagnosis. Some symptoms happens that difficultly correctly to interpret, for example,to define the reason of weariness, a headache or tachycardia. It is known, that the organic reason of some symptoms sometimes long time remains not distinguished.

Nevertheless careful analysis, all the same, must result for us by target.

There are many medicines and drug on a market now and It is at times difficult to choose and it happens that it is impossible to find the necessary drug.

I now prefer to buy medicines online.I found web site where is good choice of the most effective drug. I recommend you to visit this site on reference.

Question…

Disease, Virus, allegric reaction??? Can you diagnose?

female patient. 25 yrs. living in central africa.
regular menstural cycles. Uses ‘the keeper’ instead of tampons or pads (a cup which is inserted to collect blood). She had protected sex with partner. One week later complained of pain while urinating. She took 250mg of Cipro q12d for 7 days. 4 days into the treatment she complained of extreme pain near the opening. Upon examination, the vagina was swollen. Slight bleeding and pus was discharged. Patient said pain was gone. One day after completion of Cipro course, patient complained of burning sensation again.
Question: What could this be? (keep in mind the use of ‘the keeper’ which would have been rinced out with an unknown quality of water before being inserted) What would be the best course of treatment?

Answers…

Answer by mopargrapeape
See a Doctor.

Answer by rachellynn200
I would guess bacteria infection.

Know the Treatment of Liver Cancer

The liver is the largest organ in the body, and the main heat-producing organ. It is surrounded by a fibrous capsule and is divided into sections called lobes. It is in the upper part of the abdomen on the right-hand side of the body and is surrounded and protected from injury by the lower ribs.

The liver is an extremely important organ that has many functions. This includes producing proteins that circulate in the blood. Some of these help the blood to clot and prevent excessive bleeding, while others are essential for maintaining the balance of fluid in the body.

Radiofrequency ablation procedure, electric current in the radiofrequency range is used to destroy malignant cells. Using an ultrasound or CT scan as a guide, your surgeon inserts several thin needles into small incisions in your abdomen. When the needles reach the tumor, they’re heated with an electric current, destroying the malignant cells. Radiofrequency ablation is an option for people with small, unresectable hepatocellular tumors and for some types of metastatic liver cancers. Although the procedure has a somewhat higher risk of serious complications than alcohol injection does, it appears to provide better outcomes.

On the day of treatment, the patient is given a mild sedative and pain medication. The radiologist makes a tiny incision in the groin—no larger than the tip of a pencil—to gain access to the femoral artery. Using moving X-ray images (fluoroscopy) as a visual guide, the physician directs a thin, flexible tube (catheter) through the artery and into the main blood vessel feeding the liver tumor. The radioactive beads are injected and carried in the bloodstream up to the tumor, where they embed and slowly kill the cancerous cells.

Surgery is increasingly being used for patients with secondary liver cancer. This can sometimes involve removing a segment of liver. Alternatively, keyhole techniques can be used to apply extreme cold or heat to localized areas of the liver.

The presence of secondary cancer within the liver implies that the primary tumor has spread via the bloodstream and as a result other organs may be at risk.

Hepatocellular cancer is more likely to develop in people with chronic cirrhosis. Your specialist may suggest a liver transplant if you have cirrhosis of the liver because of previous liver disease, infection with a hepatitis virus or from drinking alcohol. You will only benefit from a liver transplant if you have a single liver tumour that is less than 5cm across, or up to 3 tumours all less than 3cm across. There is an added difficulty of having to wait for a suitable donor. This can take months. During this delay, the cancer will continue to grow and you have other treatment to try to control it.

Radiation Exposure can lead to liver sarcomas, sometimes as long as 5 decades after the exposure. The common thread to liver cancer risk factors is chronic irritation, which causes the liver cells to divide more quickly than they ordinarily would to repair perceived damage. The more often cells divide, the more the chance for a genetically abnormal one to arise, with the gene changes leading to its becoming cancerous.

Question…

If you already have HPV and now think you have cerivical cancer is there anyway to treat it?

My friend already has the HPV virus and we found out today that she may also have cervical caner. One of the treatments for Cervical Cancer is the HPV vaccine, but since she already has HPV she can’t have the vaccine are there any other possible treatments?

Answers…

Answer by Lily L
The pap smear detects cervical cancer in the precancerous stage. The cells can be removed if they get too close to being cancer. It’s a very minor surgery called a cone biopsy or a LEEP.

That being said, it’s not like this is a magic cure. It involves removing pieces of the cervix. But it’s very effective. For most women, the abnormal cells never return.

A theraputic HPV vaccine is being tested right now. They basically inject you with stuff that boosts your immune system to specifically target HPV. It heals you with no surgery required.

Relax. At least 8 of 10 women will get HPV.

Answer by momo
Sorry but she can take the HPV vaccine it will not help her at all because she has the virus and there is no cure for HPV. But I’m sure there are treatments for the cancer. I would suggest she discuss with her doctor the steps to take from here.

Answer by tarnishedsilverheart
The HPV vaccine is not a treatment for HPV or the abnormal cell that HPV create, the vaccine is a preventative it prevents 4 HPV types before you have been exposed to the virus.

They are several therapeutic vaccines in trail…but all are over 5 years away. Your friend may want to see if she qualifies for any clinical trails using one of the vaccines that are being tested.
Understanding cervical cell changes

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/understandingcervicalchanges

Treatment options for cervical cancer will be recommended by what stage her cancer is Stage O to Stage IVB

This link will give you the treatment for each stage of cervical cancer:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/cervical/healthprofessional

They are two main types of cervical cancer…one is the squamous cells which is most common and are generally slow to grow the other cell types is adenocarcinoma’s which can be more aggressive…some women have a mixed type. What treatment option the doctor will use is also determined by what kind of cell changes the doctor sees.

I am sorry your friend is going through all this…knowledge will give her the power to know what is best for her.

I have high risk HPV of the vaginal cuff VAIN 3 and of the CIS vulva.

Cervical cancers and cervical pre-cancers are classified by how they look under a microscope. There are 2 main types of cervical cancers: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. About 80% to 90% of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These cancers are from the squamous cells that cover the surface of the exocervix. Under the microscope, this type of cancer is made up of cells that are like squamous cells. Squamous cell carcinomas most often begin where the exocervix joins the endocervix.

The remaining 10% to 20% of cervical cancers are adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinomas are becoming more common in women born in the last 20 to 30 years. Cervical adenocarcinoma develops from the mucus-producing gland cells of the endocervix. Less commonly, cervical cancers have features of both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas. These are called adenosquamous carcinomas or mixed carcinomas.

Herpes Zoster Shingles – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Herpes zoster is commonly known as shingles. It is also known simply as zoster or zona. Shingles or herpes zoster is a nerve infection that results from the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. The chickenpox virus (varicella zoster) continues to reside in a dormant state in the body’s nervous system after an episode of chickenpox. It can go on to cause shingles many years after the chickenpox infection.

Causes

The factors that cause the virus to be reactivated are not clear. We only know that the virus breaks out of nerve cell bodies and travels down the nerve to cause a viral infection of the skin in the vicinity of the nerve. It is possible that a lowered immunity may trigger the shingles outbreak. Illness, stress and trauma may also trigger herpes zoster. Cancer, AIDS, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, immunodepressants and cortisone can also make people susceptible to shingles.

Symptoms

Herpes zoster or shingles causes more pain and less itching than chickenpox. In the early stages of shingles, a person may feel a burning or tingling sensation on the skin. The skin becomes extremely sensitive on an area on one side of the body. The painful sensation persists for one to three days, after which a rash develops in the same area. This may be accompanied by a headache or fever.

The rash soon develops into blisters containing clear fluid. The blisters later turn yellow or bloody before forming a crust or scab. The blisters usually heal after two to four weeks, leaving scars and skin discoloration.

Shingles is often very painful because the virus travels along the nerve to the skin, causing damage and inflammation to the affected nerve. The pain can be so severe that painkillers become necessary.

Shingles or herpes zoster usually affects the trunk and buttocks, but it can also appear on the face, neck, arms or legs. Blisters that appear on the tip of the nose may indicate possible eye involvement. Shingles on the face near the eye must be treated immediately to prevent possible permanent eye damage.

Treatment

Herpes zoster usually clears on its own in a few weeks. However, a shingles sufferer may require pain relievers to ease the discomfort. Cool compresses may also bring relief. If the infection is diagnosed early, oral antiviral medication can be prescribed within 72 hours from the time the rash appears. Antiviral medication does not cure shingles, but it helps to heal the rash more quickly. The severity of the symptoms will also be minimized. Antiviral medication can also prevent painful complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

A corticosteroid may be prescribed along with painkillers to reduce inflammation and pain. If postherpetic neuralgia develops, antidepressants and anticonvulsants may be of help.

Get Treatment of Mumps

The use of the herb Indian aloe is a wellknown remedy in the indigenous system of medicine for any inflamed and painful part of the body. A piece of a leaf of this herb should be peeled on one side, warmed and then sprinkled with a little turmeric (haldi) and the extract of Indian barbery (rasaut), and then bandaged over the swelling.

Symptoms may be relieved by the application of intermittent ice or heat to the affected neck area, acetaminophen, oral for pain relief (do not give aspirin to children with a viral illness because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome). Warm salt water gargles, soft foods, and extra fluids may also help relieve symptoms.

Persons with mumps should drink plenty of fluids, get bed rest, and take medicine to control fever. Warm moist towels can help relieve the discomfort of the swelling. Children with mumps should be kept home from school or day care until 9 days after the swelling begins, or until the swelling goes away.

Bed rest, plenty to drink and paracetamol for the fever and pain are the only recommended measures. Application of cold packs over the enlarged glands may help to decrease the discomfort. The patient is usually infectious from about 1 week before symptoms appear until about 4 days after the swelling occurs. To prevent the illness, mumps vaccine is given together with the measles and rubella between the ages of 1 and 2. A booster dose is given just before starting school. The vaccine can also be given to adults if needed.

Mumps is preventable by immunization. All children should be vaccinated to protect themselves and others from mumps. The mumps vaccine is part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine series given to children beginning at 12 months of age. As is the case with all immunizations, there are important exceptions and special circumstances. Health-care providers should have the most current information on recommendations about the mumps vaccination.

Most people recover from mumps without any long-term problems. In rare cases, long-term problems, including deafness, can result. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for mumps that can prevent related complications.

Mumps is caused by a virus, antibiotics aren’t effective. Like most viral illnesses, a mumps infection must simply run its course. Fortunately, most children and adults recover from an uncomplicated case of mumps within two weeks.

Treatment includes analgesics for pain, antipyretics for fever, and adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration from fever and anorexia. If the patient cannot swallow, I.V. fluid replacement may be used.

Acetaminophen or ibuprofen are commonly used to reduce fever and relieve discomfort. Bed rest is advised for the duration of the fever. Ice packs or heating pads may ease the pain of swollen glands.

There is no specific treatment for mumps. Ice or heat packs applied to the neck area and with acetaminophen (Tylenol) may help relieve pain. Do not give aspirin to children with a viral illness because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Warm salt water gargles, soft foods, and extra fluids may also help relieve symptoms.

Pain relievers may be used for comfort. For most children, the swelling in their glands goes away in a week. Any child with mumps should not return to school or day care for 9 days after the start of parotid swelling.

If you have mumps, you should be kept out of school or work for 7 – 10 days after symptoms begin, as you are considered highly contagious during that period. You should eat soft foods, avoid acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus or tomato products, and take pain relievers as needed. A male with swollen testicles should rest in bed until symptoms subside. Pain may be relieved with ice packs, or by supporting the scrotum with cotton or gauze, or an athletic supporter. A health care provider may perform a hearing test on young children who develop mumps, to detect any possible loss of hearing. If the patient develops pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with nausea and vomiting, the provider may administer IV fluids. Please see the monograph on Pancreatitis for further information.

Complete Information on Dermatitis Herpetiformis With Treatment and Prevention

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is the skin eruption which intensely itches. The blister measles virus does not cause dermatitis herpetiformis, even if the name suggests it. The DH cause is the allergy to the gluten, the protein is discovered in the wheat and other grains. Usually allergies, likes hives and hay fever, are made by the body’s IgE system. Dermatitis herpetiformis is different, and is an allergy of the IgA system. IgA is an antibody produced in the lining of the intestines. The usual allergy treatments are useless. Dermatitis herpetiformis usually begins in the twenties, though children may sometimes be affected. It is seen in both men and women. People with dermatitis herpetiformis occasionally develop lymphoma in the intestines. Dermatitis herpetiformis clears completely when all gluten is eliminated from the diet, although healing usually takes several weeks to occur.

Herpetiformis of the dermatitis appear usually in young adults, and are commoner in people and people original of some areas of northern europe. The breaking loose is caused when the gluten in the diet with IgA combines, and together they enter the blood flow and pass on. They eventually clog up the small blood vessels in the skin. This attracts white blood cells, and releases powerful chemicals called complements. Although these diseases may tend to isolate individuals with the complaint, the situation is becoming less difficult year by year. There is no known prevention of this disease. Persons with this condition may be able to prevent complications by avoiding foods that contain gluten. Several chemicals have been associated with induction of DH, including potassium iodide and cleaning solutions. Gastric manipulation (surgery) may induce Dermatitis herpetiformis.

The dermatitis herpetiformis symptom is the intense fever, stings and itches in the elbow, the knee, the scalp, the buttocks and behind neighbor. More places are possible and are is affected and is serious can change. Dermatitis herpetiformis looks like likely red, itches bump small group. There are tiny water blisters, but these are quickly scratched off. Before they form, the area usually has a burning feeling. They scab and heal over one or two weeks, but new spots continue to appear. The gut may also be affected by this allergy; this is called gluten-sensitive enteropathy or celiac disease. There are cases of gluten-sensitive enteropathy that have turned cancerous so an evaluation by a gastroenterologist is prudent. It is a systemic condition, the unpredictable skin rash may appear or be exacerbated by any irritation such as dry skin, scratching or clothing that is rough or scratchy.

The diagnosis of dermatitisherpetiformis usually at least one skin biopsy, and sometimes requires a blood research. As soon as confirmed, the treatment, although austerity life lung is can put in the wax and decrease. A strict gluten-free diet will also be recommended to help control the disease. Adherence to this diet may eliminate the need for medications and prevent later complications. For patients unable to tolerate dapsone, particularly those who develop hemolysis, sulfapyridine may be substituted. Other, less effective treatments for dermatitis herpetiformis include colchicine, cyclosporine, azathioprine, and prednisone. UV light may provide some symptomatic relief. Cyclosporine should be used with caution in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis because of a potential increase in the risk of developing intestinal lymphomas. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis.

Abrasions ? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

A corneal abrasion is a painful scrape or scratch of the surface of the clear part of the eye. This clear tissue of the eye is known as the cornea. This transparent window covers the iris, the circular colored portion of the eye. The cornea has many nerve endings just under the surface, so that any disruption of the surface may be painful.

A scratch, cut or minor injury on the cornea. The cornea is the clear layer at the front of the eyeball that has a protective function. The cornea can be injured by such things as dirt or sand getting in the eye or even vigorous rubbing of the eye. Corneal abrasions may be very painful and can cause symptoms such as tearing, blurred vision and headaches.

A corneal abrasion heals by the movement of neighboring epithelial cells, which slide over the wounded area, and through a cell division process called mitosis, which fill in the abraded area with new epithelial cells. Within two to three days of trauma to the cornea, these new cells start to adhere to the underlying membrane of the epithelium, called the basement membrane and within seven to eight days the abraded area usually heals completely without scarring.

Causes

Injury to the cornea or the imbedding in the cornea of a foreign body, such as a small piece of steel, sand or glass. A bacterial infection may follow the injury. Use of contact lenses, especially extended-wear lenses. Complications of the virus, herpes simplex, that produces cold sores on the mouth and can affect the eye. Infections of the eyelids and conjunctiva. Defective closure of the lid. Smoking or other environmental eye irritants.

Symptoms

Corneal abrasions and foreign bodies usually cause pain, tearing, and a feeling that there is something in the eye. They may also cause redness (due to bleeding from blood vessels on the surface of the eye) or, occasionally, swelling of the eye and eyelid. Vision may become blurred. Light may be a source of irritation or may cause the muscle that constricts the pupil to undergo a painful spasm.

Injuries that penetrate the eye may cause similar symptoms. If a foreign object penetrates the inside of the eye, fluid may gush out.

Tea Tree Oil is very effective for cleaning abrasions and healing. Just take a bowl and add 4 drops of tea tree oil and 1 cup of warm water and wash the abrasion with this mixture 3 times a day. Marigolds are wonderful to have growing as they are great for abrasions. All you have to do is take some flowers of the marigold and crush them then apply to the abrasion. Apply Aloe Vera gel on the affected part, as it acts as a soothing home remedy for Skin Abrasion.

Treatment for Abrasions

Conventional treatment of abrasions and road rash included treating the area by cleaning the wound with mild soap and water or a mild antiseptic wash like hydrogen peroxide, and then covering the area with an antibiotic ointment and a dry dressing. However, it has been found that the use of antiseptics such as hydrogen peroxide may actually cause harm to the tissue and interfere with the healing process.
